Out-of-Control Sexual Behavior

Out-of-Control Sexual Behavior

At Wholeview, we treat out-of-control sexual behavior (OCSB) in the context of substance use disorders using an integrated approach that addresses both conditions simultaneously. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is the cornerstone of the treatment, focusing on identifying and modifying the cognitive distortions and behaviors that drive both compulsive sexual activities and substance use with a focus on how the two interact. CBT helps individuals develop coping strategies, improve self-regulation, and manage triggers that lead to these behaviors. Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is also effective as it targets emotional dysregulation and self-harm behaviors, including substance use and sexual compulsivity.

We may refer to a pharmacological evaluation as medications can be beneficial, especially when tailored to address both Out-of-Control Sexual Behavior (OCSB) and substance use disorders. Antidepressant medications (SSRIs) can reduce compulsive sexual urges and manage co-occurring depression or anxiety. Naltrexone, an opioid antagonist, has shown promise in reducing cravings and the euphoric effects associated with both substance use and compulsive sexual behaviors, thereby helping to manage both conditions concurrently. Group therapy can also offer a community where individuals can share experiences, learn coping strategies, and receive ongoing support to prevent relapse.

We also offer couples therapy using Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy that can help couples regain trust and heal together.
