Wholeview Offers CRAFT for Our Families
Treatment for family members and supportive loved ones is an important part of a patient’s recovery. At Wholeview, we utilize Community Reinforcement and Family Training (CRAFT), an approach designed specifically for people concerned about a loved one’s use of alcohol or drugs.
What is CRAFT?
Community Reinforcement and Family Training (CRAFT) or CRAFT is a non-confrontational, skills-based program that helps families encourage their loved ones to seek treatment while improving their own well-being. Unlike traditional “tough love” or intervention methods, CRAFT focuses on positive reinforcement and effective communication to create a supportive environment for change.
How Does CRAFT Work?
CRAFT teaches family members how to:
– Communicate effectively: Learn how to talk in ways that reduce conflict and promote understanding.
– Reinforce positive behaviors: Encourage sober behaviors by rewarding them, making sobriety more appealing than substance use.
– Set healthy boundaries: Establish clear, supportive limits without enabling negative behaviors.
– Take care of yourself: Prioritize your own mental health and well-being throughout the process.
Why Choose CRAFT?
Studies show that CRAFT is highly effective. In fact, up to 70% of loved ones who participate in CRAFT succeed in getting their family member into treatment—significantly higher than traditional methods like interventions or 12-step programs.
Who Can Benefit from CRAFT?
CRAFT is ideal for:
– Parents, spouses, or partners of someone struggling with addiction
– Family members who want to help but don’t know how
– Loved ones dealing with a resistant or ambivalent person who refuses treatment

For Direct
Treatment for family members and supportive loved ones is an important part of a patient’s recovery. At Wholeview, we utilize Community Reinforcement and Family Training (CRAFT), an approach designed specifically for people concerned about a loved one’s use of alcohol or drugs.
Non-confrontational behavioral principles help loved ones become motivated to enter treatment. CRAFT focuses on three areas:
- positive communication strategies
- teaching how to set up contingencies to reward the identified patient when he/she/they is doing well while also ignoring negative behaviors and allowing natural consequences of use to occur as much as safely possible
- self-care techniques for family members
These skills and strategies can support loved ones in helping the patient as they enter and remain in care. It can also bring down the temperature for a family in crisis and reduce stress and anxiety for the entire family.
CRAFT leads to reduced conflict and a healthier and more sustainable life for people caring for someone struggling with alcohol or drug use.
