

Psychologist
Dr. Swanson is a licensed clinical psychologist with over 30 years of experience. He specializes in the treatment of individuals with substance use and co-occurring mental health disorders. His expertise is in Motivational Interviewing (MI), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT).
Dr. Swanson received a doctoral degree in Clinical Psychology from the University of Missouri, Columbia and did his Internship in Clinical Psychology at the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School of Rutgers University.
Before joining Wholeview Wellness, Dr Swanson was an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Albert Einstein College of Medicine (AECOM). In his first twelve years at AECOM, Dr. Swanson was the Director of an evaluation and case management program for substance use disordered individuals on public assistance. For the next seven years, he served as Director of three outpatient programs; two in medication assisted treatment and one in intensive chemical dependency treatment.
Prior to AECOM, Dr. Swanson was at St. Barnabas Hospital where he ran CBT groups and utilized MI in treating psychiatric inpatients. Later, in his role as St. Barnabas’ Chief Psychologist at Riker’s Island, Dr. Swanson oversaw all mental health programming.
Dr. Swanson has published articles in the areas of motivational interviewing, medication assisted treatment and therapeutic communities in a correctional setting.
Trained in the scientist-practitioner model, Dr. Swanson utilizes research to inform his clinical practice.
